At an unknown time in the past, a wave of meteorites struck the Earth. Due to the small size of these meteorites, there was no panic or cause for alarm, other than some curiosity as to why so many where directed towards Earth at one time. Each of these meteorites contained several thousand microscopic extra-terrestrial life-forms.
When these life-forms came into contact with the environment, they began rapidly changing into animals. There was an attempt made to contain these alien creatures, but it was a failure due to their sheer number, and the fact that they where appearing all over the world.

The creatures not only evolved with each successive generation, but the individual creature's bodies where also changing to adapt. In only a year, the creatures had managed to colonize every continent and fill every ecological niche on the planet.  It wasn't long after this that they began competing with Earth's natural wildlife, which where terribly obsolete in comparison. The animals of Earth began going extinct at an astronomical rate, leading to severe changes in the balance of the ecosystem. This was the greatest catastrophe mankind had ever faced.

All the years of tampering with and polluting nature seemed minuscule, in the midst of mass extinction. What made the alien creatures so much more successful than the native animals is that they possessed seemingly supernatural abilities. Some had differing levels of control over the elements, some had terrifying strength and speed, and some could even read human minds. While many people wondered how the creatures obtained such abilities, most saw them only with fear, as they struggled to cope with their rapidly changing world.

No one could agree on how to deal with these creatures. Some wanted to experiment on them, to try and harness their abilities. Others thought they where a plague, a weapon, sent to destroy humanity, and thought the only way to save mankind was to destroy the creatures. Some countries attempted genocide on the aliens, only to be nearly destroyed by their animalistic power. Brute force was no longer considered an option, and it seemed that Man would soon forfeit his title as dominant species of Earth.

It looked as if humans of the future would have to rebuild their world in constant fear, but eventually a miracle arrived, in the form of a new piece of technology. It was a small orb that could expand and contract its own size, and converted the bodies of unconscious, living animals to energy to be stored within the orb, with no harm done to the animal.

This potentially dangerous device was modified to work only on the alien animals, and at first it was only used in emergencies to contain the more dangerous beasts. With scientists and engineers from all over the world collaborating together, the device was again modified, this time with the ability to alter the mind of the captured aliens upon being released from the orb, less hostile and able to be trained.

With this amazing machine, humans managed to tame these aliens who had so quickly and drastically changed their lives. After a series of many small conflicts, the governments of the world managed to settle their collective differences, and a semblance of world peace was achieved. The evolution of the aliens began to decline as they had settled into their respective environments. The world would never be the same, and although many people still hated and resented them, others began to embrace the creatures, seeing their arrival as a new beginning.

Many different terms where tossed around to refer to the aliens, but the one that was finally deemed official was related to the orbs used to contain them. People often kept the orbs in their pockets or around their belts. They called them "Pocket monsters", but after several generations of people grew up with the new animals, most of whom disliked the idea of referring to them as "monsters", the term was made into a Portmanteau: "Pokémon".
A short story based off a popular franchise.

Don't spoil the big (and stupidly obvious at about the 5th paragraph) surprise!
